There has been exponential rise in number of insomnia cases in every age group. About 30% of the general population complains about the sleep disruption and almost most of them have reported reduced functionality in daytime at work or school. What is this? What are the causes? How it can be detected and diagnosed? Let us get you through it.

Insomnia is defined as a state in which the concerned person is not able to sleep or stay asleep. This leads to different outcomes in terms of dissatisfaction, fatigue, low energy, low concentration, mood swings and decrease in efficiency. One can detect insomnia on the basis of these specific outcomes.

Types of Insomnia

It can be further classified in terms of the duration it is experienced as Acute and Chronic. Acute insomnia is short termed, based on anxiety or stress felt by a person, for example a night before exam, stress of a bad news etc. It resolves with time without any specific treatment. Whereas Chronic insomnia lasts for about three months and occurs at least three nights per week. The reasons can be changes in environment, depression, unhealthy sleeping habits, long term use of certain medications. It can also be a result of another medical issue, thus it is not always possible to detect the cause and direct relationship.

Further insomnia can also be differentiated with the state it is experienced in i.e. onset and maintenance insomnia. It is explained as difficulty in falling sleep and discontinuous sleep sessions in addition with waking up early in the morning respectively.

Treatment for Insomnia

Treatment for insomnia includes behavioral, psychological, other medical components either individually or their combination, depending upon the case history and symptoms. Physicians suggest to improve sleeping habits i.e. bedtime habits and actions you do before sleep. Try to go to sleep and wake up at a designated time for some days and avoid taking naps in afternoon.

Then some cases may need Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which includes addressing the thoughts and behaviors that hinders good sleep. This can further be divided into stress reduction, relaxation and sleep schedule management.

Doctor can also prescribe sleeping pills depending on patient’s case history and insomnia patterns. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine and sedatives like alcohol at late hours of the day as they can keep you awake and interfere with sleep quality respectively. Also opt for exercise regularly in the morning to energize the body for better work efficiency and good sleeping results. Try to choose light snack before bed instead of heavy meal. Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet and cozy. If you can’t sleep and worrying about things then make a to-do list before going to bed so that you can unload your burden and sleep like a baby. These simple steps will help you to avoid sleeping disorders and lead a perfect healthy life with greater efficiency.

  • Always keep in mind too much iodine can degrade your health condition due to under or over activity (Hypothyroid and Hyperthyroid respectively) and very little iodine can swell your thyroid gland (Goitre).
  • Deficiency of Vitamin D is associated with Hashimoto’s disease (type of Hypothyroidism). To avoid such state consume fortified milk as it consists of vitamin D, calcium, protein, and iodine. Avoid gluten and consume yogurt because it can regulate gut issues like heartburn due to the bacteria present in it.
  • Hyperthyroidism drains out your energy, so consume beans as it consists of protein, antioxidants, complex carbohydrates, and loads of vitamins, minerals, high fiber content (which helps in resolving constipation issues of Hypothyroidism).
  • It is advised to have chlorophyll shot upon waking up as it works as an energy booster and assists in removing heavy metals that can inhibit thyroid functionality.
  • Maca can be highly beneficial as it balances hypothalamus and pituitary gland, because they release TRH (thyroid-releasing hormone) and TSH respectively which regulate thyroxine levels. It also includes zinc, B vitamins and iron- prerequisites for production of thyroid.
  • Choose a diet with contents like low fat, low calorie spread and avoid high salt intake and cut down on more consumption of fats & sugars in form of cakes, biscuits, chocolate.
  • Food items rich in calcium and supplement medication must be consumed with a gap of at least four hours as it can interfere in absorption of levothyroxine.
  • Avoid high consumption of iodine as it will be of no use, if one is taking thyroid hormone such as levothyroxine for Hypothyroidism or for Goitre.

Flabless 40s | How to Reduce Belly Fat in your 40s

How to Reduce Belly Fat

When we reach our 40s we tend to crave for different food items in the market available 24×7. We love to go to supermarkets and fill our carts, but have we ever looked at table describing the carb, protein and fat contents. Ah! Never, who cares. It ok, if you were in your 20s. But you are not and whenever you look at the needle of the scale it disappoints you, then you choose a desert of your choice to feel better unintentionally increasing your weight.

You make resolutions to control your diet, lose your weight but end up with increased waist size every single time. Although you put efforts by saying “No” to your favorite sundae and opting for Zumba class after a hectic day at office. Does it pay off? You might say “No its all in vain”. But it is not entirely wasted because it depends on your metabolism rate, which reduces at the rate of 5% in every 10 years after 40. Yeah you can blame it!

Step by step guide – How to Reduce Belly Fat

  • Observe your metabolism and choose smartly what food support your system and what don’t to maintain count of calories avoiding weight gain.
  • Eliminate the possibility of underlying metabolic conditions such as hyperthyroidism. Opt for TSH test and results over 2.5 are possible indicator as recommended by American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE).
  • Eat little after every 3-4 hours, increasing your number of meals to 5-6 which helps in controlling blood sugar and overeating habits.
  • Eating food after 8 p.m. add up to hips and stomach where as in morning its all expended due to difference in metabolism activities.
  • Choose food items of your diet carefully which fight fat instead of triggering it. Spice up your food as its natural chemicals can shift your metabolism in higher gear and benefit in long run. Calories are burnt while digesting proteins so consume more of them.
  • Be ally with your muscles, because muscles consume calories. Use basic strength training with hand weights, bar and stretch bands. Do exercises like planks, curls and pilates to strengthen your core muscles.
  • Keep a good night sleep on your side as it controls two hormones- leptin and ghrelin, maintaining hunger and satiety. Less you sleep, ghrelin hikes up and leptin drops down resulting in more craving. Sound Sleep makes metabolism more active and keeps up sugar processing engines too.
  • Treat your sweet tooth with half the dish and save it for later. You may not want it then. Avoid artificially flavored sweets as it fails to satisfy natural craving.
  • Focus on fuel to energy ratio. Body adapts to new changes and tries to stick to it. So balance the equation and maintain your weight. Drink more water to stay hydrated and keep up with your metabolism. Avoid stress and divert your mind with other activities to unwind feeling hunger.
  • Adapt changes in your lifestyle slowly to tune up the metabolic engine and for that you have to monitorize number of calories you consume or burn. Avoid energy drinks as it leads to problems like anxiety, high BP and sleeplessness.
